THIS WEEK'S HEADLINES
Delta management has advised your MEC leadership team that an IT “system limitation” led to an error in which some pilots were overpaid for their vacation during the March and April 2024 bid periods.

The Company has offered affected pilots three options to rectify this overpayment.
  1. Leave the vacation overpayment as-is and your final vacation during the 2024-2025 vacation year will pay the remaining balance.
  2. Remove the remaining vacation that will be unpaid.
  3. Repay the overpayment and restore your vacation balance so the remaining vacation will pay correctly, in the bid period in which it’s used.
If you doubt the accuracy of this vacation overpayment, please first contact the Chief Pilots Office and ask them to verify the accuracy of the vacation overpayment and request they “show their work.” If you believe that the Company’s calculations are inaccurate, please fill out this overpayment form.

Additionally, if you have received this notification and believe the Company is not following the state laws appropriate for your base, including the timeliness of notification, please contact the appropriate state labor authority to file a complaint.

This latest pay issue once again underscores the importance of Delta finally investing in employee-facing technology so pilot pay is accurate, timely and transparent.
The Retirement & Insurance Committee (R&I) recently sent out R&I Update 24-04: Where’s My Money? which updates participating pilots on why 401(k) “spill” doesn’t appear on paychecks, related resources that can be found on NetBenefits, Base Allocations, and retirement payment options.

For more information or specific questions, please contact the R&I Committee by DART, DALRI@alpa.org, or call 1-800-USA-ALPA.

Congressmen Langworthy, D’Esposito, and Bergman stand with Delta pilot union volunteers during the announcement of the Aviation Safety Caucus in front of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.
Yesterday, Delta pilots joined Congressmen Nick Langworthy (R-NY), Anthony D’Esposito (R-NY), and Jack Bergman (R-MI) in Washington, D.C., to announce the creation of the Aviation Safety Caucus. These members of Congress have championed ALPA’s priorities and look to expand the union’s efforts to ensure aviation remains safe and secure.

The 24 bipartisan members of the Aviation Safety Caucus are committed to working with all industry stakeholders on legislation and solutions that will keep the flying public safe. The Delta pilots thank these members of Congress for their commitment to aviation safety and look forward to being a critical resource for this group and their important work.

Committee News
Hotel Workers Strike
As most of you are aware, hotel workers have been on strike in multiple cities over the past week. Unlike UAL, we do not have contractual language that prevents us from staying at a property where workers are striking or that requires the Company to move us to a different hotel. However, the Company will move us if the situation creates a safety or rest issue for our pilots.

If you believe your layover is being disrupted, please contact the Duty Pilot. If you feel your rest has been impacted and have questions about the process of calling in fatigued, please reference the Fitness Review Board’s Committee page. If you have a fatigue concern about any rotation, please send it to DALFRMT@alpa.org.
CASC Committee Spotlight - Aircraft Design and Operations
Most Delta pilots are familiar with ASAP and FOQA due to the frequency of use. Much less understood is the Central Air Safety Committee and the touchpoints this committee has throughout the entire operation. Your Central Air Safety Committee is comprised of over 120 volunteers that make up seven subcommittees and three programs. Over the coming months, we will highlight these committees and programs in more detail with two main goals: highlight the teams of volunteers constantly bringing a pilot viewpoint to safety AND provide contact information or ways to get in touch with the team of volunteers that give time on behalf of safety and the entire Delta operation.

One of the seven sub-committees is ADO (Aircraft Design and Operations). The sub-committee is tasked with providing input and monitoring airworthiness, performance, software development, and certification. As with any CASC safety group, the goal is to provide a viewpoint on safety from the pilot’s perspective. ADO is no different. They engage with a variety of groups at Delta regarding MELs, airworthiness directives, equipage changes/updates, Dispatch, and TechOps.

The following list is not comprehensive, but as an idea, some recent topics of discussion included: 717 LPV capability, future DL aircraft with LPV capability, 7ER PEG2 service bulletin, 350-1000 EDR software, 737 MAX, secondary barriers among all aircraft, 330 harmonization, 320 mods during heavy checks, crew rest facilities, GPS spoofing/jamming.

ADO also has a great relationship with PAFCA Safety. PAFCA is the only other union group on Delta property, and they represent approximately 600 Delta dispatchers. There are multiple projects in the pipeline regarding daily ops and safety promotion for the betterment of both groups.

ADO is comprised of nine Delta pilot volunteers. Four of our volunteers have an A&P, and two were previously DL TechOps employees with multiple years of experience. Through outreach and safety promotion, your ADO group is learning how we can interface with TechOps to help reduce ODIs and improve the operation. ADO brings a unique perspective to the table because our goal is simple—safety. We don’t have metrics to hit or receive incentives. We want to leave the operation safer than we found it through education and consistent processes. This is a lofty goal that is never trumped by other motives. We are thankful for our TechOps counterparts and excited about our growing relationship.

As a reminder, you are the eyes and ears of the operation, specifically regarding daily safety. If you notice something that doesn’t look right or needs further attention, the best thing you can do is complete an ASAP with details. So often, data from ASAPs will trickle down to other committees with CASC for input or evaluation. Additionally, if you would like to get in touch with your ADO committee, the most efficient path is through a DART. When completing a new DART, select the “Central Air Safety/CIRP” dropdown in the first line of text and include “Attn: ADO.”
