Engage Episode: Following the Money: Dues Down, Value Up, Money Back in Your Pocket
Engage_78_3308958.png

What exactly does ALPA National's Executive Council do and why should Delta pilots care? Host First Officer Ryan Argenta sits down with Delta pilot and ALPA Executive Vice President Captain Reed Donoghue for a behind-the-scenes look at one of the least visible but most impactful areas of the Association. Reed explains how the Executive Council serves as ALPA's fiduciary, oversees spending, approves major initiatives, and shapes policy that affects pilots across the industry. The conversation dives into ALPA's strong financial position, the proposed dues reduction from 1.85% to 1.55%, recent dues returns, and efforts to push more resources directly back to MECs, LECs, and pilot services.

Reed also discusses how pilot-driven policy changes make their way through the organization, why engagement matters, and how line pilots can help shape the future of the Association. Whether you've ever wondered where your dues go, how ALPA's budget is managed, or why pilot participation matters, this episode provides an informative look at the work happening behind the scenes on behalf of Delta pilot.

Feedback Requested: Rate Your Pilot/Flight Operations Experience

Have you had an issue with Flight Operations customer service? ALPA is seeking feedback on specific episodes that pilots would consider a “difficult customer service experience,” including response time or ability to reach anyone from any of the following departments:

  • Pilot Assist
  • Pilot Leaves
  • Training Planning
  • Crew Resources
  • Duty Pilot
  • Chief Pilot’s Office
  • Crew Scheduling / Crew Tracking
  • Crew Assist
  • AskHR

Share your experience via our Pilot-Flight Operations Survey. Please be as detailed as possible, including dates, times, nature of the issue as well as the names of any individuals you may have had interaction. The information collected from this survey is for internal ALPA purposes only and will not be shared.

Note: This survey is for information purposes only. Pilots requiring ALPA assistance should still submit claims to the appropriate committee via DART or Scheduling Ticket System (STS). If your experience was strictly a Contract or Scheduling issue, please use DART or STS.  If you had an “customer service” interaction issue, a delay in response, or had an interaction in which incorrect or untimely information was provided, please fill out the survey.

We appreciate your participation!

Your Upcoming Dues Return Offer: Watch Your Email

ALPA’s Executive Council has authorized a dues return offer for the third consecutive year. This year’s offer totals $53 million, and all pilots who were dues obligated in 2025 are eligible.

Eligible pilots will receive an email from DuesReturn@alpa.org with instructions on receiving your dues return offer. You will need to provide direct deposit information for an electronic funds transfer or confirm your mailing address for a paper check.

DuesReturn@alpa.org is an official ALPA email address. It is extremely important for all pilots to take the steps outlined in the email to ensure you can receive and accept your offer.

You can also visit the dues return page on the ALPA website by clicking the button below.

Contract Administration

Crew Meals Settlement Agreement

On January 31, 2024, the Delta MEC filed MEC Grievance 24-03 alleging that Delta had violated PWA Section 5 C. – Crew Meal  and other related sections of the PWA. The Company and ALPA attempted to resolve our differences on this issue using mediation in 2025 but were unable to reach an agreement. In April 2026, ALPA re-engaged with Delta and reached a Settlement Agreement TA on Crew Meals.

Read Contract Awareness Bulletin 26-06, which details the Settlement Agreement and includes FAQs.

Central Air Safety (CASC)
Air Traffic Services Meeting

ALPA Central Air Safety Committee Air Traffic Services Chair Roger White (pictured left) and Flight Operations Airspace Technical pilot Eric Morse (pictured right) visited Atlanta Approach Control last week. The goal with these regular meetings is to continue to develop a strong relationship with the controllers that keep the world’s busiest airport running. Thanks to this relationship, ALPA and Delta can work directly with the controllers and advocate for Delta pilots on safety issues, efficiency improvements, and collaborate on the general operation of Atlanta Airspace.

During the meeting, they presented the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA), represented by Nick Marangos (pictured center), with two Delta aircraft models. The models are an demonstration of gratitude for their dedication to the operation and continued collaboration.

Summer Stress & Burnout: Is it fatigue or something different?

Summer often means increased flying, disrupted routines, and added responsibilities at home. While fatigue is a normal part of the job, burnout can be harder to recognize. Signs of burnout may include irritability, loss of motivation, emotional exhaustion, difficulty concentrating, or feeling disconnected from work and family.

The key difference between fatigue and burnout is that while fatigue typically improves with rest, burnout often lingers even after a few nights of good sleep. Take a moment to check in with yourself, looking for signs of burnout. Prioritizing recovery and asking for support early can make a significant difference.

If you think you might have burnout and don’t know what to do about it, give us a call. Whether you are looking for information specific to this or simply want to talk to someone who is safe and confidential, PAN is here to help. Call 1-888-4DAL-PAN or request that a volunteer reach out to you on our website.

DPAC: Denial is Not a River in Egypt

In the case of a chemical dependent pilot, the person using  drugs or alcohol enjoys the experience. If he or she were to acknowledge that use of  drugs or alcohol created problems in his or her life, it would be a normal and sane response to limit or stop their  use. Since the alcoholic or addict doesn’t want to or is unable to stop using drugs or alcohol, they play a psychological trick on themselves and deny the cause-and-effect relationship between use and the  problems it creates. This denial is so strong, consistent, and common that it is considered a defining characteristic of the disease of chemical dependency, also known as substance use disorder.

It is important to understand that denial is not lying. It is not a conscious distortion of facts. It is a subconscious mechanism that distorts reality as it relates to the person’s chemical use. The alcoholic or addict simply sees no problem with using their drug of choice. In fact, they often distort reality to the point that they reverse the relationship saying their problems cause chemical use, and not vice versa.  This denial will typically start to create issues at home and in workplace performance. DPAC can assist pilots who recognize this as an issue in their lives.
